Phoenix from the Volcanic Ash
“A lot of wine in the glass, the terroir clearly recognizable and always enjoyable to drink,” says Walter Frauwallner, winemaker and father of two, summing up his highlights. In 2002, at the young age of 21, he took over responsibility for his parents' wine cellar, and within a short time transformed it into one of the best wineries in Styria. With his fifth vintage he earned the title of “Wine Talent of the Year” from Gault & Millau, and since 2018 the winery has been a member of the honorable quality winegrowers’ association “Styrian Terroir and Classic Wineries”, or “STK” for short. At the Styrian State Wine Assessment 2021, Walter Frauwallner was recognized as a two-time regional winner and named “Winery of the Year” . A steep career, fueled by hard work and talent. Anyone who loves Burgundy varieties will find their Garden of Eden here: Pinot Blanc and Morillon , as Chardonnay is called in Styria, are, along with Sauvignon Blanc , among Walter Frauwallner's strengths. The grape varieties find the perfect basis on the volcanic and calcareous soils in Straden and St. Anna to develop into structured, individual top wines. Walter Frauwallner has his principles. No growth at any price, manual harvesting, no herbicides for ten years, no fertilizer for 25 years: |
Great importance is attached to the work in the vineyard. Manual labor, quality-oriented foliage care and grape selection during harvest are a matter of course for winemaker Walter Frauwallner. In the cellar built in 2008 in the middle of the Buch site, more free space was created for steel tanks and oak barrels. This makes it possible to keep the distances from the vine to processing as short as possible - even during pressing, natural gravity is used instead of pumps.
