Wines of terroir par excellence
Rebel in a T-shirt Things couldn't be going better for Christoph Neumeister at the moment: in 2019, Falstaff named him winemaker of the year and in 2021 he finally received the greatest recognition from the influential gourmet magazine: The Neumeister winery was included in the ranks of the Falstaff ★★★★★ wineries , which only includes the very best producers in the country. The modest winemaker is the third generation to run the Neumeister winery in Straden in Vulkanland Styria . The steep and demanding vineyards in Straden, which have been cultivated organically since 2013, are characterized by barren, calcareous sedimentary soils from the Tertiary (sandstone, limestone) and Sarmat gravel. The Illyrian-Pannonian mixed climate with high rainfall requires a lot of manual labor, but allows a long growing season and late harvest. Careful hand-picking, extended maceration times, gentle and slow aging in the cellar, spontaneous fermentation, long yeast contact times and late bottling result in well-structured and elegant wines with a high degree of complexity and clear origin. |
Christoph himself is the winemaker and responsible for vineyards and cellar management.
The vineyards cultivated are steep, challenging, older than average and have scarce soils.
All varieties and vineyards are handled egalitarian. Neumeister wines mirror the difficult climatic conditions including high precipitation (>900 mm/year), high humidity and danger of hail as well as the resulting long vegetation period and late harvesting time, naturally high acidity levels,
low pH-values and a moderate alcohol content. All vineyards are organically cultivated.
Pear, citrus, spicy, yellow apple flavours, good minerality, compact, good food partner.
Recommended as aperitif, to fish & seafood, vegetables, salads and poultry.

We renounce of herbicides, pesticides, chemical fertilizers and synthetic plant protection substances; instead, we prefer compost cultivation, diverse greening and the application of
useful creatures and plants. We take great care to accentuate distinctions of single vineyards and vintages and preserve them. Manual quantity reduction and quantity drops (hail, rainfall) result in strongly varying availabilities. The right harvesting date is strictly selected following qualitative
aspects. 100 % selective hand-picking into small boxes (20 kg) and a second selection at the riddle
board. Most careful vinification in our gravity cellar (gravity flow), long maceration periods,
spontaneous fermentation, long yeast contact, late and low sulfarization, no fining and late
bottling guarantee wines which are non-industrial, typical and characterized by their origin.
